It is set to be a busy end to the month for Rangers and manager Danny Rohl as he looks to continue to turn our form around this season and whilst we can expect more transfer window incomings, it looks like James Tavernier could be one of the departures. After an utterly woeful start to the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership campaign for the club, our board finally acted after former manager Russell Martin managed to prove that he was even worse than a number of fans had expected and we eventually appointed the East German born Rohl to occupy our dug out hot seat. The 36 year old former Sheffield Wednesday gaffer took a bit of time to get his feet under the table at Ibrox but he is starting to get his rewards now and with 22 games played in the league campaign, we are in third spot in the table with 44 points from 12 wins and eight draws. From what looked like being a disastrous season, it is entirely possible that we hit the summer having won the jackpot at an ETH casino, as Rohl has got us back at the top of the table and more than in the hunt for the title this campaign.Rohl is already on record as wanting more from the transfer window and he clearly expects our 49ers Group owners to back him having already bought in both Belgium left back Tuur Rommensfrom Westerlo and Danish midfielder Tochi Chukwuani from Sturm Graz. Speculation rumour mill talk is still rife that VfL Wolfsburg attacker and 40 capped Danish international Andreas Skov Olsen will be the next player through the doors on a loan spell as well.We do, of course, still have to balance the books and we saw a number of new players arrive during the summer transfer window. Fans will be aware that despite the role he has played at Rangers since his arrival back in the summer of 2015, 34 year old Tavernier’s future has been in doubt for a couple of windows now and that speculation has only increased given that he is out of contract come the end of the season.Clearly a new shorter term deal is not going to be agreed, and it appears that former Liverpool and Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez is now looking to take advantage of the fact that our highest scoring defender in British history (146 goals) is now free to sign a pre contract agreed with clubs outside of the country. Benitez now manages Greek giants Panathinaikos and Tavernier could well think that it is an interest challenge and an interest destination as he begins to wind down his professional playing career and looks to the future.Should a pre contract ultimately be signed with the side, it would obviously not come into play until the end of the season and then summer where Tavernier would become a free agent as his contract expired, but there is, of course, the possibility that they would then offer us a nominal fee in order to complete the transfer before the deadline day window slams shut.We would then have a decision to make as whilst he continue to be a mainstay under Rohl, recouping some kind of fee to minorly offset our spending would be welcomed. But that would be a matter for the board and Rohl would it not.
