The race to become the next manager of Rangers is intensifying. Two prominent figures, Marco Rose and Steven Gerrard, are neck and neck at even odds. On one hand, there’s Steven Gerrard, the prodigal son of the club, who has already shown his leadership qualities by guiding the team to a memorable Scottish Premiership victory in 2021. On the other hand, we have Marco Rose, who most recently managed RB Leipzig. Despite that, Rose knows what it takes to guide a team to victory, as evidenced by his leading Borussia Monchengladbach to a Champions League appearance (Rangers Review, Moar, 2025).
Let’s not forget the context. The excitement surrounding Gerrard isn’t just because of old times; it’s connected to some serious business moves off the pitch. The 49ers Enterprises are looking to take over at Ibrox and could bring Red Bull in as a shirt sponsor. This partnership would echo the deal they have at Leeds United. Bringing Gerrard back into the fold during all these changes fits perfectly. On the other hand, Marco Rose is the perfect representation of that sleek, modern, European style. He might not be able to reinvigorate the Rangers tradition, but he could certainly shake things up on the tactics board.
Are you pondering other potential managers? Sure, there are a couple out there—Paul Lambert and Derek McInnes for starters. Their names have been thrown about. Yet it all seems rather pointless right now compared to what the runners and riders in this managerial race are doing. Both Gerrard and Rose could walk into a stadium and spot the guy in the crowd who watches 90-minute replays of games and who has a binder full of alternative ending scenarios for the club’s last campaign. Club legends, fans, guys with no personal lives, topped off with a dollop of continental flair and, in Rose’s case, a fair few trophies recently.
Deciding between these two feels like choosing your weapon in battle—do you stick with your seasoned general who led you through victorious campaigns, or do you roll the dice on an ambitious tactician who’s ready to rewrite your playbook? Either way, Rangers supporters have every right to be excited. Whichever contender lands that job will be stepping into one of Scottish football’s most electrifying chapters yet. This managerial saga is far from over.
