As news is breaking this morning, Andreas Skov Olsen is about to join Rangers. The Danish international, 26, has agreed a loan deal at Rangers with an option to buy. This is exactly what the option on Bojan Miovski should have been. Ibrox Noise demanded that instead of it being a permanent signing up front, that the boy be brought in on loan with an option to see how he would handle the weight of the shirt, as we explained in our piece when Rangers found a ‘plan B’ should Skov Olsen deal fall through.
There is quite a difference between handling the SPL as an Aberdeen player and handling the SPL as a Rangers player. He failed completely in Girona. We did not want to see wasted money again. However, the club instead spent half up front and another half on appearance clauses. At least that is our understanding of that deal.
That deal was under the influence of former sporting director Kevin Thelwell. He has long since departed. We are now seeing the work of the current scouting team and ownership. That work is clear in the Skov Olsen deal. Yahoo Sports reported that Rangers were waiting on a decision for the Danish winger, showing the deal was close.
Ibrox Noise highly rates Olsen, to say the least. He is an outstanding winger. We know that all signings carry risk. This one, as a loan with an option to buy, lets us try before we buy. On paper, Andreas Skov Olsen could be dynamite for Rangers. Football is not played on paper. Ibrox Noise called it a game-changing signing as the move drew closer, and fans were clearly excited.
Even when a team signs a great player, that player may not settle. It may not click. Look at Djiga. Consequently, the Skov Olsen deal as a loan with an option is the perfect solution. STV News covered Rangers’ approach to securing Olsen as a smart and cautious loan move.
The fact is that Rangers’ ownership can afford the fee. We believe it would be around £10–15M. We can afford that number now. Paying it all up front carries too much risk. We want to see how Skov Olsen gets on at Rangers. Truly we believe he will shine. We are very pleased to secure a player we have chased for many seasons. The loan with option is a very wise choice. We fully endorse it. If only we had done it with Miovski as well.
