Rangers are said to be making waves behind the scenes this summer as reports suggest the Ibrox side have launched a loan bid for Bournemouth right-back Max Aarons. While nothing has been officially confirmed by either club, sources close to the situation indicate exploratory talks may be under way. It is not known how advanced these negotiations are or whether any formal agreement has yet been made but it certainly appears that Rangers are making a move to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season.
Max Aarons, currently on the books at Bournemouth, has had a somewhat quiet spell on the south coast since leaving Norwich City. Still only 24, the fullback was once considered one of England’s brightest young defensive talents and attracted attention from clubs such as Manchester United and Bayern Munich during his peak Championship years. Now Rangers could be poised to offer him a career reboot at Ibrox and it would not be the first time the Glasgow giants have sought to revive the fortunes of a stalled Premier League talent.
For Rangers, bringing in Aarons would signal clear intent to address weaknesses in the squad exposed last season. With the departure of a number of fringe players and the uncertainty over others, defensive reinforcements are high on the agenda. The right-back role remains a position of concern and Aarons, if he can rediscover the form he once showed at Carrow Road, could be a major asset to the Ibrox outfit. His attacking runs and Premier League experience might suit the Scottish Premiership and provide Rangers with the dynamism they lacked at times last term.
There will of course be questions about fitness and consistency, but on loan terms the move would carry relatively low risk for Rangers and potentially high reward. Bournemouth may be open to letting the defender leave temporarily if he is not in Andoni Iraola’s plans. With European qualifiers looming and Rangers needing strength in depth across the pitch, a move for Max Aarons makes a lot of strategic sense and could prove to be one of the smarter pieces of business this window.
If Rangers can secure his services without breaking the bank, supporters may soon be seeing a new face marauding down the Ibrox right flank when the season kicks off. For more background on Aarons’ current status at Bournemouth, the BBC’s latest coverage provides further context.
