Rangers are understood to be making a major push for Dan Neil this summer and are currently viewed as frontrunners for the midfielder’s signature.

Neil will officially leave Sunderland as a free agent in the summer, his exit effectively confirmed when he joined Ipswich Town on loan in January. The revived interest was first reported earlier this month by The Scotsman.

Ipswich went up with Neil making 17 appearances in all competitions. Rangers head coach Danny Rohl, an admirer from his time at Sheffield Wednesday, is driving a significant recruitment effort ahead of the new campaign.

Beyond his midfield qualities, Neil fits a brief to add leadership. He captained Sunderland during a promotion run and is thought to be earmarked for a leadership role if he completes the move.

Rangers are also making a major push for Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland as they look to start the window strongly. Confidence in Scotland has grown that a deal for Neil is a strong possibility.

Neil attended the Stadium of Light on Sunday as a supporter alongside Lynden Gooch as Sunderland booked a Europa League place for next season. He will now make a final decision on his future.

Earlier this month, chairman Andrew Cavenagh underlined leadership as a key theme in the club’s summer recruitment.
