Old Firm derby takes centre stage for second time in a week in Scottish Cup quarter-finals

Rangers and Celtic collide in the Old Firm derby for the second time in a week on Sunday.

The fierce Glasgow rivals take a brief break from a thrilling three-way title race in the Scottish Premiership as they instead contest a high-profile Scottish Cup quarter-final clash at Ibrox, where an increased away following of 7,500 will be in attendance.

The two sides could not be separated at the same venue last weekend, when Reo Hatate’s late penalty follow-up and an earlier header from Kieran Tierney saw Celtic fight back from a 2-0 first-half deficit inflicted by Youssef Chermiti’s excellent brace that included a sensational overhead kick.

That dramatic 2-2 draw saw Martin O’Neill’s Celtic stay third and two points behind Rangers, but they have since leapfrogged them into second place after winning their game in hand at Aberdeen 2-1 on Wednesday thanks to a winner from Benjamin Nygren.

Celtic are now five points behind leaders Hearts, with Danny Rohl’s Rangers six points off the title pace in third with nine games remaining.

But now focus switches back to domestic cup action, after Celtic outlasted 10-man Rangers 3-1 in extra time in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals at Hampden Park back in November and went on to lose the showpiece to St Mirren.

Celtic saw off minnows Auchinleck Talbot and Dundee (also in extra time) to reach the last eight of this competition, while Rangers scored 13 goals combined in big wins over Annan Athletic and Queen’s Park - emphatically avenging their shock defeat from last season by the latter.

Record 42-time winners Celtic had lifted back-to-back Scottish Cups, but lost last season’s final to Aberdeen on penalties as they were denied a treble.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Rangers vs Celtic team news

Rohl said he had a “full house” in Rangers training this week, with midfielder Connor Barron back having not played since early January due to a knee injury.

Dujon Sterling and Ryan Naderi both shook off knocks to start against Celtic last weekend.

O’Neill said on Friday that Tierney’s foot injury sustained after also scoring at Pittodrie “was clearing up”, while Kasper Schmeichel trained on Friday for the first time following illness and an injection to help a long-term shoulder problem.

They will be both assessed on Saturday, with Viljami Sinisalo having started in goal during Celtic’s last three matches. Rohl’s comments on the situation irked O’Neill ahead of last weekend’s derby.

Alistair Johnston and Callum Osmand remain out after setbacks, as well as Arne Engels, Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Marcelo Saracchi is back and Julian Araujo has played the last two games, though Kelechi Iheanacho was left out again in midweek and Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Joel Mvuka were also omitted once more.

Rangers vs Celtic prediction

Last weekend was everything you expect from the Old Firm derby, and why it is such a must-watch fixture almost every time.

You’d hope this iteration will be no different as both teams look to the cup to try and strike a key psychological blow in the title race, though O’Neill will be demanding a far better start from his team at Ibrox after their wretched opening last time around as they trailed 2-0 inside just 26 minutes - and it could have been much worse.

Keeping Chermiti quiet will be instrumental to their hopes after he made it eight goals in his last four games against Celtic and Hearts - Kilmarnock are the only other team he has scored against so far this season.

Rohl, meanwhile, will be desperate to ensure his team maintain their intensity levels across the full 90 minutes this time after they failed to prevent Celtic’s dramatic comeback in a nervy second half.

We expect another high-octane, entertaining draw that will necessitate more extra time and possibly even the lottery of penalties.

Rangers to win 3-2, after extra time.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

Rangers narrowly shade the all-time Old Firm head-to-head table and beat Celtic 3-1 away back in early January.

There have been 2-2 and 0-0 draws in the league this season to go along with that Scottish League Cup semi-final thriller. Celtic have not won at Ibrox since September 2023.
