Rangers vs St. Mirren – Match preview and team news

  1. Date: Tuesday, 30th December.
  2. Kick-off: 7:45pm BST.
  3. Venue: Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow.

Rangers team news

Rangers head coach Danny Rohl has received a significant boost with John Souttar returning to training following an eight-game absence due to a muscle injury. The Scotland international’s comeback represents a major step forward for the Ibrox defence. He was used as a late substitute against Motherwell in their recent game and might play more this time around.

However, Rangers remain without several key players. Bailey Rice, Oliver Antman, Nedim Bajrami, and Rabbi Matondo all continue their recovery from muscle and knee injuries, with early January returns anticipated for several of them.

Derek Cornelius faces a longer-term absence, with February expected for his return although recent reports suggest that he can also make a comeback in late January. Additionally, midfielder Nasser Djiga is unavailable as he represents Burkina Faso at the Africa Cup of Nations.

St. Mirren team news

St. Mirren manager Stephen Robinson has confirmed that he will rotate his squad following Saturday’s goalless draw with Kilmarnock. Robinson said: “There were certain individuals that the last couple of weeks probably just caught up with them. We’ll get them re-energised for Tuesday night. We’ll have energy. We’ll make changes in the team. We’ll freshen it up”.

Other than rotation possibilities, there are not many injury concerns for St. Mirren, other than Keanu Baccus, who is sidelined due to his hamstring injury and will not be a part of the squad against Rangers.

Form

Rangers

Danny Rohl’s Rangers have started to turn the corner following a difficult opening to the season. The Gers bounced back from their 2-1 defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle by securing a 1-0 victory over Motherwell at Ibrox on Saturday, courtesy of a second-half strike from Thelo Aasgaard. They currently sit in third position in the table with 32 points in 18 matches.

St. Mirren

St. Mirren’s recent form has been nothing short of remarkable, particularly following their historic 3-1 Scottish League Cup Final victory over Celtic at Hampden Park on December 14. That triumph marked only the second League Cup success in the club’s history, with Marcus Fraser opening the scoring and Jonah Ayunga netting a second-half double to secure the trophy. The Paisley side remains unbeaten in five consecutive matches across all competitions, with their most recent result being Saturday’s goalless stalemate with Kilmarnock.

Predicted lineups

Rangers: Butland; Tavernier, Sterling, Fernandez, Meghoma; Barron, Raskin; Aasgaard, Diomande, Gassama; Chermiti

St Mirren: George; Fraser, King, Freckleton; McMenamin, Phillips, Gogic, Idowu, John; N’Lundulu, Ayunga
