The veteran technician is looking for the most stability and defensive solidity as Roma try to turn things around and emerge from their slump.
According to Filippo Biafora of Il Tempo, after trying out his preferred 442 formation earlier in the week, yesterday Ranieri insisted on a 451 defensive set-up which offensively shifted into a 433.
Matias Soulé and Stephan El Shaarawy were given a chance to feature on the flanks.
The certainty, writes Biafora, is that Ranieri wants to stick to a backline of 4 to give major solidity to the team.
