Deportivo Alavés sealed direct promotion to Liga F two weeks ago, a 4-0 win at CE Europa sparking celebrations Raquel Gil will not forget.
“It had to be today, from the hotel you could feel it, we knew together we would do it,” she told Superdeporte. Alavés controlled the match, Europa’s defeat confirmed their relegation, and with the score 0-4 Andrea Esteban sent Gil on in minute 83.
A week earlier at Mendizorroza they drew with CP Cacereño before 5,200 fans, so promotion had to wait. Gil called the occasion special, and two injured team-mates had prepared photos and names for every player.
Last season ended painfully, Alavés finished second on 56 points, level with Alhama, but the tiebreaker favoured the Murcian side. In the play-offs Cacereño held them 2-2 in the first leg then won 1-2 in Vitoria.
This time consistency has told, with 52 points from 16 wins, four draws and four defeats, 42 scored and only 14 conceded. “Football is very unfair sometimes, but I think we do deserve this, for the project and our daily work,” said Gil.
She has six goals this season, including an 87th-minute winner against CA Osasuna after coming on in minute 77. “I saw Gaste, passed it, broke into space and hit it with my heart, really hard, and it went in.”
With two rounds left Alavés trail Barcelona B by two points and now target the Primera Federación title. Next up is Valencia at Ibaia, where Gil once played.
