For much of the last year, Marcus Rashford looked like a player drifting further away from the level expected of him.

Questions over his confidence, consistency and long-term future followed him through one of the toughest periods of his professional career. 

At one stage, even the possibility of missing out on the World Cup entirely felt realistic.

That is why his inclusion in England national football team’s final squad for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada carries far more emotional weight than a normal international call-up.

Rashford’s message

The forward, who spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Barcelona, used the moment to thank the people who continued supporting him while doubts surrounding his level continued to grow.

Several figures played a major role in helping the attacker rebuild both confidence and stability over recent months.

Among them was Unai Emery and Aston Villa, where Rashford managed to rediscover rhythm and competitive confidence during a difficult phase of his career.

Barcelona also became a major turning point. The club’s decision to trust him at a time when criticism remained intense gave the England forward a fresh environment to restart mentally and professionally.

“Special thanks to Unai, Hansi, Thomas, Aston Villa, Barcelona & England for believing in me when things got tough,” wrote the forward after being included in the World Cup squad.

Flick’s support proved crucial for Rashford

Within Barcelona, one of the biggest reasons behind Rashford’s resurgence has been the confidence shown by Hansi Flick.

The German coach continued backing the attacker even when performances were inconsistent early on. 

Rather than increasing pressure publicly, Flick focused on rebuilding the player psychologically and tactically, allowing Rashford to gradually recover his sharpness.

That trust paid off immensely as Rashford has played a part in as many as 28 goals this season for Barcelona (14G, 14A) with one match left to play.
