Raúl Rangel continues to build an increasingly remarkable legacy with the Mexican National Team. After El Tri’s victory over Czechia and recording another clean sheet, the Chivas goalkeeper officially wrote his name into FIFA World Cup history by matching a feat previously achieved by only one other Chivas legend.
‘Tala’ finished the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage without conceding a single goal, equaling the achievement of the legendary Ignacio “Cuate” Calderón at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. The coincidence is extraordinary, as both goalkeepers accomplished the feat on home soil.
The milestone is another testament to Chivas’ renowned youth academy, which produced both goalkeepers and continues to reaffirm the club’s tradition of developing players who play pivotal roles in defining moments for the Mexican National Team.
Rangel once again delivered a performance worthy of the occasion. Commanding in the air, composed with the ball at his feet and alert whenever called into action, the Chivas shot-stopper inspired confidence throughout the match to record his third consecutive clean sheet of the tournament.
Beyond the historic achievement, Rangel’s recent numbers highlight the outstanding form he is enjoying. He has kept a clean sheet in 10 of his last 12 appearances for Mexico, an 83.3 percent success rate that has made him one of El Tri’s most reliable players.
His overall numbers are equally impressive. Rangel has now made 19 appearances for the Mexican National Team, recording 12 clean sheets, meaning he has kept his goal untouched in more than 63 percent of his matches with El Tri.
And the story may not be over yet. With three consecutive clean sheets, ‘Tala’ has already tied Mexico’s all-time FIFA World Cup record. In the next match, he will have the opportunity to become the sole holder of that mark and further cement his status as one of the country’s premier goalkeepers.
