David, what were your first impressions after arriving here in São Paulo?

  1. "We were given a very warm welcome. The day before yesterday, we checked into the hotel, had a bit of a rest, and then had breakfast together. Straight after that, we had our first scheduled activity, which was the visit to the Brazilian football museum. That was really amazing. It's great that we're all here together as a team."

What was your personal highlight of the museum visit?

  1. "I played with the table football. That was really fun. But above all, it was amazing to see the images from the past and of the history of football here in Brazil. It's crazy how much football means here, and how important it is to the country and the people."

When you look at the footballs and boots from the past, are you glad that you're playing in the modern day?

  1. "Absolutely! Obviously, I'm glad that the equipment has moved on. But it's also interesting to see how football has changed over time – not just in terms of the boots, but also the balls and the way the game is played. In the end, we're all united in loving this sport, and, particularly in a country like Brazil, it's great to be able to experience football's progression up close."

Were you surprised to find a picture of yourself in the exhibition?

  1. "I'd been told that there was a photo of Germany in there, and then I actually spotted myself on it. It's obviously a great feeling to be represented here in a museum like this. Overall though, the other pictures and exhibits were at least as fascinating."

There's now one more friendly to play against Santos before you join up with the Germany national side. How much do you still have in the tank after a long season?

  1. "I definitely still have enough energy. I couldn't play every game this season because of injury. There's a personal highlight ahead for me, because I still have the chance to win a trophy. That's why I'm making sure I keep fit – I was at the gym this morning – and I want to join up with the national team at a very good level of fitness. I'm also trying to use the time to recover though."

Is there anything you're particularly looking forward to this week?

  1. "First and foremost, it's spending time together with the whole team. Being able to sit down once again with the lads I've been alongside all year, and closing off the season somewhat. It wasn't the season we expected or were hoping for, but now, we need to look to the future together."
