LaLiga said in a statement that Rayo Vallecano’s home match against Atlético de Madrid will be played at Estadio Ontime Butarque on Sunday at 16:15, after Vallecas failed a pitch inspection. The fixture is matchday 24 of LaLiga EA Sports.
After a week of round-the-clock work with RoyalVerd to relay the surface, league inspectors on Thursday still deemed the turf unfit to host the game.
It is the second fixture that cannot be staged at Vallecas, following last week’s late suspension of the tie against Real Oviedo.
Butarque, home of CD Leganés in the Segunda División, LaLiga Hypermotion, is available with Leganés away at Córdoba this weekend.
LaLiga considered using the Riyad Air Metropolitano, Atlético’s ground, but ruled it out to avoid both league meetings being played there.
There was regret for the disruption, recognition of Rayo’s efforts amid recent bad weather, and an emphasis on competition integrity and participant safety. The derby has been designated high risk, requiring additional security in ticketing, fan segregation and stadium access.
