RB Leipzig seek first academy breakthrough as Wagner and Schäfer outline pathway challenges | OneFootball

RB Leipzig have long excelled at signing and selling young imports for profit, yet no academy graduate has become a first-team regular. According to BuLi News, head of youth development David Wagner and managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer are intent on fixing the pathway.

Appointed in summer 2025, Wagner accepts the club’s rapid rise since 2009 has left parts of the academy playing catch-up with the senior side. He says Leipzig must now align structures with first-team standards.

Wagner argues three elements must coincide, producing top prospects, a sporting boss creating squad space, and a head coach willing to pick them. He says Schäfer and head coach Martin Demichelis back this, and Demichelis has already handed minutes to 17-year-old Samba Konaté this season.

Leipzig are also boosting competitive exposure. A new international U21 RBL Cup brings Atlético Madrid, FC Porto and Liverpool to Saxony, complementing the new German U21 league, the UEFA Youth League, the DFB-Nachwuchsliga and the DFB-Pokal.

The U19s will play more than 45 competitive matches this season, an increase of over 40 percent on last term. Wagner says Germany has not played enough youth games and calls the uplift a significant step, with training to prioritise individuals over team results.

Recruitment is shifting earlier, with Schäfer noting 18, 19 or 20-year-olds established in top five leagues are very hard to sign. Wagner concedes Leipzig lack a domestic track record, but says their reputation in France means they can sit at the table even against PSG, because French players have progressed through Leipzig to top clubs. Schäfer stresses mentality, calling resilience key and adding, “You need to fight for your dreams.”
