Lutsharel Geertruida’s Sunderland future is uncertain after the club’s option to buy the RB Leipzig defender reportedly lapsed, potentially opening the door to Leeds United and other suitors.
According to Sky Germany, the option, thought to be just under £20 million, has expired, with Leipzig aiming to sell the 25-year-old permanently and interest spanning the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga. The report adds Sunderland remain in contention after fresh talks, are seeking a lower fee and let the clause lapse as a result, with no decision yet. It also suggests Geertruida could use the upcoming World Cup to enhance his prospects.
The Dutchman spent 2025/26 on loan at the Stadium of Light from the Bundesliga club, with the purchase option included in the initial agreement.
TEAMtalk reports that Leeds, Aston Villa, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace have monitored his situation, while clubs in Italy, Germany, France and Spain have lodged enquiries with Leipzig.
Voetbal International says Liverpool, who explored a January move amid an injury crisis, have cooled, and following the departure of head coach Arne Slot, Geertruida currently has no contact with their transfer chiefs.
