The Royals are cashing in on one of their first-team players for a six-figure fee

More exits are in store for Reading, despite the fact they head into the 2026/27 League One campaign determined to finally break into the play-off places after three seasons of inconsistency since their relegation from the Championship.

Finishes of 17th, seventh, and 12th have shown flashes of progress without ever delivering a sustained promotion challenge, which is why Leam Richardson will be eager to change that this time around in the third tier. However, there are reasons for optimism with Reading.

The arrivals of Jacob Brown, Udoka Godwin-Malife, and Kyreece Lisbie on permanent deals, alongside the loan signing of Josh Stokes, have added quality and depth, particularly to their attack. Brown brings proven experience, Stokes offers creativity, while Lisbie has the potential to become an exciting long-term option.

However, Reading's squad has also undergone significant change. Matt Ritchie and Derrick Williams have retired, while Andy Yiadom, Mamadi Camara, Ben Elliott, Michael Stickland, and Tivonge Rushesha have all departed, taking experience away from a young-looking squad.

The squad is therefore far from settled so far. With more than a month of the transfer window still remaining, further incomings and outgoings are inevitable.

While Richardson will hope to strengthen key areas before the deadline, there is also the risk of losing players the club would rather keep if suitable offers arrive.

How Reading navigate the remainder of the window could have a major bearing on whether they are finally capable of mounting a genuine top-six challenge. There are likely to be more leaving the club in attack, given the volume of forward signings thus far.

It appears as though Reading are now set for a fee to be received for one of their forwards, with Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan headed abroad. The versatile forward ordinarily operates as a striker but can be utilised out wide as well, with Ehibhatiomhan scoring 10 and assisting two in all competitions for Reading last term.

Journalist Farzam Abolhosseini states Danish side AC Horsens are set to purchase Ehibhatiomhan from Reading, who will receive €750,000 (£640,000) - the equivalent o 5.6 million kroner for him.

He adds that the 23-year-old Englishman, who scored nine goals in League One last season, is expected to be in place within the next couple of days. Horsens were only recently promoted back to the Danish Superliga last season.

Ehibhatiomhan has been one of Reading's most frustrating players because, while his talent is obvious, his end product has too often come in bursts rather than consistently. His record of 27 goals and seven assists in 139 appearances is respectable for his age, but it perhaps overstates his reliability when you look closer at how those goals have been distributed.

His hat-trick against Luton Town last season demonstrated the quality he possesses when confidence is flowing, while a late-season brace against Wigan Athletic further highlighted his ability to take over matches. That came in a flurry of seven goal involvements in seven games, having managed 12 all season (48 appearances) before that.

Those two fixtures alone accounted for half of his 10 goals, underlining his tendency to enjoy purple patches before fading from prominence again. There is plenty to admire about his power, direct running, and willingness to take defenders on, but Reading needed him to influence matches far more regularly.

Despite his age and potential, cashing in perhaps makes sense, especially if they intend to use the fee towards other areas of the squad after adding plenty of fresh faces to a new-look attack already.
