Reading FC set to reignite interest in signing forward during January transfer window

Reading FC are believed to have reignited their interest in signing Sporting Lisbon forward Pedro Mendes according to Portuguese media outlet, Record.

The forward is currently on loan with UD Almeria, but has struggled for consistent game time with them this season, having made just ten appearances in all competitions, whilst also failing to score in his time with Jose Gomes’ side.

This new report from Record claims that Sporting Lisbon are set to terminate his loan with the Spanish side early due to this lack of consistent minutes, with talks with Reading reportedly at an ‘advanced stage’.

The Royals were previously linked with a move for Mendes during the summer transfer window, but the 21-year-old opted to move to Almeria instead, although that decision perhaps hasn’t gone as well as he originally hoped for.

A move to Reading could be tempting for Mendes as well, with the Royals well in contention to mount a serious push for promotion into the Premier League this term.

Veljko Paunovic’s side are currently sat fifth in the Championship table, and are just three points adrift of the automatic promotion places after their opening 23 matches of this year’s campaign.

The Royals are set to return to action this weekend, when they take on Luton Town in the third round of the FA Cup at Kenilworth Road.

The Verdict:

They’re seemingly keen to get him through the door!

Reading’s reported interest in signing Mendes has been no secret, and it certainly came as a surprise to see the club miss out to Almeria in the summer.

But he’s not been a regular for the Spanish side, which has seen him linked with a move to the Royals once again in the January transfer window.

Reading could certainly benefit from strength in depth in their attacking options as well, with Lucas Joao and George Puscas only recently returning from injury.
