Troy Parrott came off the bench to give Real Betis a 1-0 win over Real Madrid at La Cartuja, handing José Mourinho his first league defeat of the season.

Madrid created enough chances to lead long before Parrott’s 81st-minute winner, with Vinícius Júnior hitting the post and Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Vallés denying Dean Huijsen and Jude Bellingham. But Manuel Pellegrini’s side stayed in the game and punished Madrid when Parrott converted the rebound from Nelson Deossa’s header.

There was still time for a frantic finish. Carlos Espí had an equaliser ruled out for offside before Kylian Mbappé was handed a stoppage-time penalty after Natan fouled Vinícius. Vallés saved the Frenchman’s spot-kick and then denied Espí from the resulting late pressure to secure all three points for Betis.

Real Madrid controlled the opening stages and forced the first major save in the 11th minute. Arda Güler’s corner was recycled back into the area, where defender Huijsen stretched to make contact, but Vallés reacted sharply to keep the effort out.

Four minutes later, Madrid went even closer. Mbappé helped create the opening before Vinícius attacked from the left and struck the post from a tight angle.

Betis gradually settled and Cucho Hernández fired narrowly wide after good work from Antony, but Madrid continued to create the clearer chances. Vinícius found Mbappé inside the box in the 43rd minute, only for the striker to be denied by two blocks in quick succession.

Bellingham then met a corner with a firm header that Vallés pushed away, before Huijsen hit the crossbar in first-half stoppage time as Betis somehow reached the interval level.

Madrid struggled to reproduce the same pressure after the break. Mourinho made a triple change in the 64th minute, introducing Bernardo Silva, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Yan Diomande, but Betis remained comfortable enough without the ball.

Pellegrini’s changes proved more decisive. Parrott replaced Hernández in the 68th minute and broke the deadlock 13 minutes later. Deossa met a corner with a header that Thibaut Courtois saved, but Parrott reacted quickest to drive the rebound home from close range.

Madrid almost responded immediately. Mbappé clipped the crossbar with a cross before substitute Espí volleyed in from Vinícius’ delivery in the 88th minute, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside.

The visitors were then given one final chance in stoppage time when Natan slid into Vinícius inside the area. Mbappé stepped up from the spot, but Vallés read his stuttering run-up and dived left to save.

Vallés still had one more stop to make, tipping Espí’s header over in the 97th minute before Betis finally saw out a memorable victory.
