Real Madrid go into the game against Deportivo Alaves with almost their entire defensive unit unavailable for selection.
Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy, and Trent Alexander-Arnold were already out injured, while Antonio Rudiger is now set to join them on the sidelines due to discomfort.
Moreover, Alvaro Carreras and Fran Garcia will miss the match through suspension, leaving Alonso with Raul Asencio and Dean Huijsen, who resumed training today, as the only two senior defensive options available.
As such, the manager will be forced to turn the Castilla ranks to make up for the absences in the defensive line.
In that regard, journalist Jorge C Picon reports that teenage defender Victor Valdepenas has a great chance of starting for Real Madrid against Alaves on Sunday.
The 19-year-old defender, who can play at centre-back and left-back, is rated very highly within the club. He was already named in the matchday squad against Villarreal in March earlier this year by ex-manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Valdepenas earned his first call-up under Xabi Alonso this week against Manchester City, featuring among the substitutes without getting any minutes.
But that could change on Sunday as the teenage starlet could make his official debut for Real Madrid, that too as a starter.
The Merengues are without a recognised left-back for the game – Carreras and Garcia are suspended and Mendy is injured. Camavinga, who has previously filled in, is also out, as is Alaba, who played in the position for a large part of his career.
Given the situation, Valdepenas has plenty of chances to make it into the lineup on Sunday, with the report suggesting that the youngster has made a good impression on the coaching staff in training sessions.
Other youngsters like Joan Martinez and Jorge Cestero, who were also in the squad vs Manchester City, are likely to be called up again.
But Valdepenas, who is on the radars of Arsenal, might get his golden opportunity to start this weekend.
