Real Madrid thrashed Monaco 6-1 in their UEFA Champions League penultimate league-phase fixture at Bernabeu on Tuesday evening.

Kylian Mbappe put Madrid ahead in the fifth minute, receiving Federico Valverde lay-off on the edge of the box, before curling his shot into the bottom-left corner.

Moments later, Vinicius Junior nearly doubled the hosts’ lead, picking up possession to power a low strike just wide of the post.

Mbappe made it 2-0, running into the box to meet Vinicius’s low cross before calmly applying the finish to register his 11th goal in the competition.

With 11 goals this season, the Frenchman is now joint-top for the most scored in a single group stage/league phase, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, who did the same in the 2015/2016 season.

Just after the half-hour mark, Jordan Teze came close to reducing Monaco’s deficit, curling an effort towards goal, only to be denied by the woodwork.

Shortly after the restart, Franco Mastantuono extended Los Blancos’ advantage with a superb finish to the far corner.

Thilo Kehrer then scored an own goal from Vinicius’s low cross, deepening Monaco’s woes.

The Brazilian eventually got on the scoresheet after the hour mark with a brilliant finish, firing an unstoppable shot into the top-right corner.

Tete pulled one back for the visitors, taking advantage of a poor back pass from Thibaut Courtois to find the back of the net.

Jude Bellingham restored Madrid’s five-goal lead late on, rounding the goalkeeper to complete the scoring.

With the result, Madrid have now climbed to second on the standings, six points behind leaders Arsenal.
