Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso is giving consideration to affording what would be an altogether surprising start to a member of the club’s academy setup on Sunday.

This comes amid the ongoing personnel crisis in Los Blancos’ backline.

Real Madrid are of course primed to return to action tomorrow evening, when they make the trip to Vitoria-Gasteiz for a La Liga meeting with Deportivo Alavés.

The visitors will be unable to call upon a whole host of important players for the fixture, particularly in defence.

Owing to a combination of injury and suspension, the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Éder Militão, Fran García and Álvaro Carreras have all been ruled out.

And as alluded to above, this situation could yet culminate in an altogether surprising inclusion in Real Madrid’s line-up at Mendizorrotza.

As per a report from Diario AS:

‘Everything points to Xabi Alonso giving Castilla player Víctor Valdepeñas, who was already included in the squad against Manchester City, his chance.’

Valdepeñas, for his part, is a 19-year-old defender, capable of lining out at either centre-back or left-back.

The Spaniard has long been considered a potential star in the making behind the scenes at Valdebebas.
