A recent report from Defensa Central has shed new light on Real Madrid’s urgent need to reinforce their defence, with Eder Militao’s fitness concerns forcing the club to act sooner rather than later.
The outlet mentions that even if Antonio Rudiger extends his contract, the uncertainty surrounding Militao has pushed the sporting leadership toward securing a new centre-back for the future.
The favourite to fill that role appears to be Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano, who has now moved ahead of Ibrahima Konate in the internal shortlist.
Over recent weeks, the French international has emerged as the strongest candidate, not only because of his profile but also due to his contractual situation.
Upamecano has yet to renew with Bayern, and his current deal expires in 2026, a detail that significantly strengthens Real Madrid’s negotiating position.
As such, Upamecano has publicly addressed his contract situation, and his words have only fuelled speculation about a potential departure.
A few weeks ago, he made it clear that money is not the defining factor in his decision, saying,

“It has nothing to do with money. I’m happy here… We’ll see what happens.”
Those comments have been interpreted as a sign that he is genuinely open to considering a fresh challenge, particularly if the right project comes along.
And at this moment, no project is more alluring than Real Madrid’s. The possibility of joining the club and reuniting with Kylian Mbappe is expected to weigh heavily on his final choice.
Opportunities of this magnitude do not come often, and the French international knows it.
Still, Real Madrid are not placing all their hopes on a single name. While Upamecano remains the preferred option, the club continue to evaluate alternatives.
Alongside the Bayern defender, Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate and Crystal Palace standout Marc Guehi are also being monitored closely as viable signings.
