Real Madrid ace Mbappe backed for Ballon d’Or by French legend: ‘Closest thing we have to a new Ronaldo’ | OneFootball

Speaking to MARCA, former Real Madrid and France midfielder Claude Makelele has praised Kylian Mbappe, tipping him for the Ballon d’Or and calling him the closest thing in modern football to Ronaldo Nazario.

The legendary midfielder, who also gave his thoughts on Real Madrid’s pursuit of Michael Olise, was glowing in his praise of Mbappe.

Ballon d’Or vote to Mbappe

When discussing this year’s Ballon d’Or, Makelele backed his fellow Frenchman.

Although he acknowledged that Real Madrid have not enjoyed the most successful season collectively, he believes Mbappe’s performances at the World Cup have been extraordinary.

“I’d like Mbappe to win it. He hasn’t won many titles with Real Madrid this season, but what he’s doing in this World Cup is exceptional,” said Makelele.

Makelele also compared Mbappe to one of football’s greatest forwards, Brazilian legend Ronaldo.

“What Kylian has been demonstrating year after year brings him closer and closer to Ronaldo Nazario,” the legendary former midfielder said.

“We called Ronaldo ‘The Phenomenon’ for a reason, and Mbappe is the phenomenon of his own generation. And what’s scary is that he still has more to prove. So yes, I’m convinced that he’s the closest thing we have to a new R9.”

Full confidence in Jose Mourinho

The former Madrid midfielder also expressed complete confidence in Jose Mourinho, who has begun his second spell as Real Madrid manager.

“He’s an intelligent, cultured, and observant coach. He’ll use his players based on the qualities they bring to the team’s balance,” he said.

He also highlighted the value Mourinho places on versatility, arguing that players capable of performing in multiple positions become invaluable over the course of a long season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold can thrive under Mourinho

One player Makelele believes could particularly benefit from Mourinho’s management is Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“Mourinho is a father figure, a leader, a great coach. He’ll take care of the rest. I don’t think it will be a problem for Trent. It’s up to Trent to listen to his coach if he wants to play and be effective,” he stated.

“And when it comes to effectiveness, a coach never gives up on his best player, not even a slightly controversial one.”
