Real Madrid have reportedly reached an agreement to sign former Liverpool player Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer.

The defender will be a free agent after his contract with the Reds expires at the end of this month.

The France international had been in talks with the club over a possible extension, but the two sides could not come to an agreement.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid have a “verbal agreement in place” with Konate.

The centre-back will sign a four-year contract with Los Blancos, provided Florentino Perez wins his bid to be re-elected as the club’s president.

Konate had offers on the table from the Saudi Pro League, but he was holding out hope that Real would come in for him.

The Spanish giants were linked with the 27-year-old last year, but coolled their interest in the player after he suffered a dip in form in the first half of the season.

Konate confirmed his departure from Liverpool on Sunday, posting on social media that it had been an “honour” to play for the club and he was “deeply saddened” he didn’t get to say goodbye at their final home game of the season.

He said that the death of teammate Diogo Jota was the most painful moment of his Liverpool, while the passing of his father was ” one of the hardest periods of my life”.

Konate joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig for a £36 million transfer fee in 2021 and went on to win the Premier League, FA Cup and two League Cups, as well as starting in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in 2021.
