Real Madrid may have already wrapped up four signings, but they are not yet prepared to rest on their laurels. New head coach Jose Mourinho wants further additions to his squad, with the next port of calls being a new midfielder.

Bernardo Silva has already been brought in to add depth in the centre of the park, but Mourinho wants a world class midfielder to start in his system. The likes of Rodri Hernandez and Vitinha have already been ruled out, but the Portuguese has identified the next player he wants to bring to the Bernabeu: Enzo Fernandez.

Real Madrid have had Fernandez on their radar for several years, but with Mourinho now at the helm, they are finally ready to make a move for him. They have already agreed personal terms with the Argentina international, as per Nicolo Schira, meaning they are primed to approach Chelsea in the coming days.

After failing to qualify for any European competition for next season, Chelsea are under pressure to sell players. Marc Cucurella has already left for Real Madrid, and in the coming weeks, he could be joined by Fernandez, who is reportedly desperately to seal a summer move to the Spanish capital.

If he does join, Fernandez would sign a six-year contract. However, it is far from certain that Real Madrid get their man, given that Chelsea are demanding upwards of €120m to give the green light for a sale – this could be out of reach for Bernabeu bosses, which is why a player(s)-plus-cash deal could be considered instead.

Sooner rather than later, Real Madrid will approach Chelsea to propose a deal for Fernandez. For now, no club-to-club talks have taken place, but with personal terms now agreed, it is a formality that talks will begin soon.
