Real Madrid: Alonso hits back at Barça president
The tension between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona once again spilled over into the press conference room. Asked about Joan Laporta’s recent comments—on Friday he claimed that "Real Madrid suffers from barcelonitis"—Xabi Alonso chose to respond directly, neither dodging the issue nor elaborating too much. The Madrid boss denounced "populist messages aimed at their supporters", before steering the discussion back to football.
Laporta also reignited the refereeing controversy by declaring:
“The referees have always favored Real Madrid... If two goals hadn’t stood last week, we’d be top of the table.”
This was a direct attack, but Alonso responded with a more measured tone.
“We focus on our own game. The most important thing is to win on the pitch, with merit and sportsmanship,” he insisted.
While Florentino Pérez refuses to get drawn into a media war, Alonso isn’t afraid to take a more direct approach—though he still calls for calm. On the eve of the trip to Girona, he reminds everyone that every match should speak for his team above all else.
