Real Madrid and Doha on Real Sociedad’s Supercopa horizon

Real Sociedad’s Copa del Rey triumph has put the Supercopa firmly in view, with Real Madrid a likely semi-final opponent and Doha emerging as the leading host candidate. Key details on match-ups, venue and dates remain unconfirmed.

La Real have six league games left in a season that veered from a relegation scare in November and December to lifting a fourth Copa at La Cartuja. According to Diario Vasco, they have secured a berth in the 26/27 Supercopa and will also return to the Europa League, though a late charge at Betis, seven points ahead with 18 to play, looks a stretch.

Head coach Matarazzo has spoken of pushing for maximum success next season, seeing this as only the beginning for a focused squad with clear potential. La Real expect a four-competition workload.

The Supercopa format pairs the Copa winners with La Liga’s runners-up, and the Copa runners-up with the champions, so, barring a major surprise, Madrid would meet La Real in the semi-finals. A nine-point gap, even with a clásico to come, appears hard to overturn. If Barcelona finish second instead, they would face Real Sociedad, leaving a Madrid derby on the other side.

Recent editions have been staged in Jeddah, but next season’s will not be held there due to the Asian Cup and the Esports Olympics scheduled in the country. The federation is courting bids, with Doha currently viewed as the front-runner, though the ongoing conflict in the region has also left this option in doubt and March’s planned Spain-Argentina Finalissima in Doha was cancelled. The competition usually runs in mid-January, but a move to late January or February is possible, and La Real may again chase a trophy far from home with limited travelling support.
