In a recent report, Bild (subscription required) claimed that Real Madrid are eyeing a move for Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano. It has been mentioned that Los Blancos are eager to get a deal done for the French centre-back next year.

Upamecano’s Decent Season In The Bundesliga

Upamecano enjoyed a solid run of form at the German club in the previous campaign when he put in a series of impressive displays for them on the defensive end of the field. The France international featured in 38 matches for Bayern Munich last season, finding the back of the net on two occasions and earning two assists on all fronts.

The 26-year-old was a solid presence when defending inside his half as he made 36 tackles, 17 blocks, 34 interceptions and 45 clearances in the Bundesliga. He even distributed the ball well from the back after making 93.9% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via fbref.com).

His current contract at the German club will expire at the end of this campaign. Thus, Real Madrid could potentially come to a pre-contract agreement with Upamecano this January.

Should Real Madrid Boss Xabi Alonso Snap Upamecano Up?

Upamecano is a solid tackler of the ball and can sense the danger well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when the opposition are on the front foot and is a tidy passer of the ball as well.

Standing at 1.86m, the French sensation can use his strong frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life in La Liga if Los Blancos manage to bring him on board next year.

Upamecano would add more bite and steel to Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso’s defence. He has what it takes to fight for a regular first-team football at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in the coming seasons.

At 26, Upamecano has his peak years ahead of him, which makes him a worthy target for the Madrid giants to pursue in 2026. Therefore, Alonso should consider going all out to snap him up on a free transfer at the end of this campaign.
