Real Madrid’s search for defensive reinforcements has taken an interesting turn, with new developments surrounding Nico Schlotterbeck potentially reopening a door that once appeared to be closing.

According to AS, although the centre-back is expected to move towards signing a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund, that does not necessarily end Real Madrid’s chances of securing his signature.

In fact, the report highlights a crucial detail that the proposed renewal is set to include clearly defined exit clauses.

These clauses would outline specific conditions under which Schlotterbeck could leave the club, and notably, some of them could even be activated as early as this summer.

What’s the story?

Dortmund’s primary objective is to avoid a scenario where they lose the defender for free, especially with his current contract running until 2027.

By inserting structured exit options into a new deal, the German club aim to retain control over his future while still keeping the door open for a potential sale under the right conditions.

For Real Madrid, this changes everything, as the Spanish giants had begun to distance themselves from the operation, believing that a renewal would effectively take Schlotterbeck off the market.

However, the inclusion of exit clauses has now revived their interest, offering a possible route back into negotiations if they decide to act.

Financially, the renewal package is expected to be substantial, with a salary increase that could reach around €14 million, alongside a long-term commitment that may extend until 2031.

Yet, the structure of the deal ensures that Dortmund will not completely shut the door on a future transfer.

The most important aspect remains the clauses themselves.

While the exact figures and conditions have not yet been made public, it is understood that they will be clearly defined, giving interested clubs a concrete guideline to work with if they choose to pursue a move.
