Real Madrid veteran Dani Carvajal was seen apologising to the fans on Tuesday night, as his side struggled to cope with Stuttgart’s attack during their Champions League debut. It had a happy ending clearly, but the Santiago Bernabeu has been growing increasingly frustrated of late.

With Luka Modric on the bench, Carvajal was wearing the captain’s armband against the German side. He was also used out of position, starting at centre-back, with Lucas Vazquez coming in for Eder Militao. The Brazilian did come on in the second half, but was coming back from a knock.

During the second half, as Stuttgart pushed on following their equaliser, the Bernabeu whistled their side loudly in the 74th minute. As captured by the Movistar+ cameras, Carvajal was seen holding his hands up to the crowd in apology for their performance.

After the match, Carlo Ancelotti, Thibaut Courtois and Jude Bellingham recognised that they struggled at times to deal with Stuttgart’s ability on the ball. Already Los Blancos were whistled during their clashes against Real Betis and Real Valladolid at home, albeit they were only a few compared to a rather loud response on Tuesday.
