Federico Valverde may be Real Madrid’s new captain, but the armband will not automatically secure him a place in José Mourinho’s strongest starting XI.

According to MARCA, one of the biggest selection battles ahead of the new season could take place in midfield, where Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni are set to compete for the same role.

Mourinho’s preferred setup is expected to include a double pivot, but the midfield picture has become increasingly complicated.

Bernardo Silva’s arrival has given the Portuguese manager a player he views as essential to controlling the game, particularly after Real Madrid failed to complete the signing of Rodri.

That leaves three players competing for two positions.

And if Bernardo is as central to Mourinho’s plans as expected, the real fight comes down to Valverde or Tchouameni.

It creates an interesting situation for Real Madrid, as their newly appointed captain could find himself competing for a starting role against a teammate who may be better suited to the manager’s preferred tactical structure.

Only one midfield place up for grabs

Real Madrid’s failure to sign Rodri has changed the way Mourinho is expected to build his midfield.

Rather than bringing in a recognised holding midfielder, the club has added Bernardo Silva, who offers a completely different profile.

The Portuguese international is seen as the player most capable of dictating the rhythm and providing the creative control Mourinho wants from midfield.

That makes him difficult to leave out when fit.

With Bernardo occupying one of those roles and being given the freedom to influence the team’s build-up and attacking play, the remaining position is where the real question begins.

Valverde vs Tchouameni

Valverde and Tchouameni are both established players, but they offer Mourinho very different qualities.

Valverde’s game is built around intensity, running power and his ability to cover large areas of the pitch.

He can carry the ball through midfield, help the team escape pressure and contribute in multiple positions when required.

Tchouameni, meanwhile, offers a more natural defensive balance.

The aforementioned outlet reports that with Bernardo expected to take on greater responsibility in possession, Mourinho could see the Frenchman as the player best suited to protecting the midfield behind him.

His ability to screen the defence, win possession and maintain positional discipline could make him an attractive option.

For now, though, Valverde has the advantage heading into the opening weeks of the season.

This is because he was among the first players to return after the World Cup, has featured in every pre-season friendly and has reportedly made a positive impression.

That preparation could prove important.

Tchouameni, by contrast, is expected to enter the season without the same match rhythm, having not played in any of Real Madrid’s pre-season.

That gives Valverde an immediate edge in terms of fitness and preparation.
