Real Madrid are considering sacking head coach Xabi Alonso after the club’s board held an emergency meeting to discuss his future.

The Spanish side have won just one of their last five La Liga games, including a 2-0 home defeat to Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu on Sunday. A chaotic clash saw Real Madrid end the game with three red cards as Fran Garcia, Alvaro Carreras and Endrick were all sent off. Defeat leaves Los Blancos four points behind Barcelona in the title race,

Alonso is now under pressure and Spanish outlet El Mundo have revealed that the Real hierarchy have held talks to discuss the 44-year-old’s position.

Alonso was appointed as head coach in the summer following a decorated period at Bayer Leverkusen. The Spaniard led the German side to a maiden Bundesliga title in 2023/24, as Leverkusen won a domestic double and became the first team in history to win the title without losing a game.

Real Madrid face Manchester City in a crucial Champions League showdown this week, in what the reports claims could be ‘the final chance’ for Alonso to save his job.

There is understood to be friction between Alonso and several big-name players, most notably Vinicius Junior, whose substitution against Barcelona last month was greeted by a furious outburst.
