Real Madrid have seen several veteran players leave over the last few years, and soon, they will need to prepare for Thibaut Courtois to join them. The 34-year-old goalkeeper is out of contract next summer, and while it would be a surprise if he wasn’t offered a new deal given that he is still the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, preparations are being made to bring in his replacement.
Current backup Andriy Lunin is not seen as someone that can take the reins when Courtois eventually leaves/retires, which is why Real Madrid are keen to secure the services of a long-term successor. And they have already identified a candidate, with MD reporting that Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen is appreciated at the Bernabeu.
Verbruggen is off the back of an impressive 2026 World Cup with the Netherlands, and at 23, he would be someone that Real Madrid can rely on for many years to come, as was the case with Courtois when he signed from Chelsea.
Given that Courtois is showing no signs of slowly down, and also that he wants to finish his career at the Bernabeu, Real Madrid are not in a hurry to secure his replacement. However, they want to keep on top of Verbruggen’s situation, so that a move can be made when the time comes.
As far as Courtois successors go, Verburggen does appear to be a very good option. He’s done well for Brighton in the Premier League, and given that he’s first-choice goalkeeper for his country too means that he has already accumulated a wealth of experience despite only being 23.
For now, it remains to be seen when Real Madrid make their move for Verbruggen or any other Courtois replacement. They have the money ready, but it’s not been decided when it will be spent.
