After facing yet another setback in La Liga, Real Madrid returned to training today at Valdebebas, with an eye on their next challenge.

On Wednesday, the Spanish capital giants face off against Athletic Club in a tricky fixture away from home, with pressure firmly on them.

Raul Asencio could be ready to return

There may be some good news on the horizon for Real Madrid before their trip to the Basque country, though.

As confirmed by journalist Alvaro Esteban, Raul Asencio returned to group training today and completed a part of the session.

The defender will train with the rest of the group again tomorrow and a decision on his participation to face Athletic Club will be made then based on his feelings.

Asencio, who had been in good form in recent weeks, was ruled out of Sunday’s game against Girona, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Real Madrid academy graduate was dealing with gastroenteritis, leading to his absence for the trip to Catalonia.

With Asencio unavailable and Dean Huijsen also out, Real Madrid went with the centre-back pairing of Eder Militao and Antonio Rudiger against Girona last night, thrusting the pair right into the thick of things immediately after their return from injury.

Now, though, the youngster seems to have fully recovered, as indicated by the fact that he was able to complete part of the group training session today.

If things go well tomorrow too, Asencio could return to the squad list for the clash against Ernesto Valverde’s men.

So far this season, the 22-year-old homegrown defender has featured 12 times in all competitions, with seven of them being starts.
