Real Madrid have moved to shut down talk of a move for Enzo Fernandez as the Spanish club issued an official statement on Thursday, denying any interest in the Chelsea midfielder.
They insisted they had made no effort to sign him, either now or in the past. The statement was unusually direct.
Madrid said they had not made any attempt, direct or indirect, to sign the Argentine. They added that they had no intention of pursuing such a deal.
The club were careful to remain respectful, though. “Real Madrid wishes to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernandez, a great footballer whose career and quality are widely known,” the statement read.
It also praised Chelsea, describing their relationship as excellent at an institutional level.
The denial follows days of mounting speculation. Several reports had linked Fernandez with a switch to the Bernabeu, with some framing him as a priority for new boss Jose Mourinho.
Madrid have now firmly distanced themselves from those claims. Other sources support their position.
Fabrizio Romano reports there have been “zero contacts” between the clubs, and that formal talks have not begun.
He adds that Madrid regard Fernandez as merely one of five midfield options.
The finances may explain their caution. Chelsea are said to value Fernandez at around £120m, a figure Madrid consider excessive.
The La Liga club are reluctant to spend so heavily on a single midfielder this summer.
The player’s own stance is clear, however. His agent, Javier Pastore, has confirmed that Fernandez is exploring a move away from Stamford Bridge.
For now, the midfielder remains focused on Argentina’s World Cup campaign.
His situation is unlikely to be resolved soon. With Madrid stepping back, Arsenal and Manchester City have reportedly entered the race for his signature.
