Real Madrid have emerged as a possible destination for Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, with the defender’s contract situation potentially opening the door to a move in the summer of 2027.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Netherlands international is attracting attention because his current Liverpool agreement is due to expire at the end of the 2026/27 season. 

The English club has yet to offer the 35-year-old a new deal, while reports in Britain have suggested that an extension may not be forthcoming.

Van Dijk’s Liverpool future creates transfer interest

That uncertainty has naturally prompted speculation about where Van Dijk could continue his career if he becomes available as a free agent.

On that note, Real Madrid are among the clubs being mentioned, and the possibility of acquiring a player of his experience without paying a transfer fee could make the deal particularly attractive.

Van Dijk remains one of the most experienced centre-backs in European football, and his availability on a free transfer would make him an appealing option for clubs looking for leadership at the back.

As expected, Real Madrid are not the only potential destination being discussed, with AC Milan, Inter Miami and Galatasaray also being mentioned as possible options for the Dutchman should he leave Liverpool.

Notably, Real Madrid brought Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool as a free agent this summer, and Van Dijk’s situation could potentially present a similar opportunity.

Jose Mourinho wanted another centre-back during the previous summer window, but the club did not complete another signing after Raul Asensio remained at Real Madrid rather than leaving.

That could leave the door open for another defensive addition in the future, particularly if the squad changes over the next two seasons.

Furthermore, Antonio Rudiger’s contract is also due to expire in 2027, creating another potential vacancy in Real Madrid’s defensive planning.

If the German leaves at the end of his agreement, Real Madrid could find themselves needing an experienced centre-back to complement their existing options.
