What initially appeared to be a straightforward contract extension has turned into one of Real Madrid’s most complex and divisive off-field sagas. At the centre of it all is Vinicius Junior.
The Brazilian forward, who is under contract until 2027, had reportedly agreed to terms for a new deal several months ago.
But the situation has taken an unexpected turn, with the club and the player at a financial impasse. Indeed, Vinicius is demanding a salary that matches Kylian Mbappé’s, including a hefty renewal bonus.
For now, Real Madrid are unwilling to match those demands, preferring to revisit negotiations once the player returns from his holidays.
As the Vinicius renewal drags, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez appears to have already identified a desired replacement for the Brazilian international.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Perez has identified Manchester City striker Erling Haaland as the ideal replacement should Vinicius eventually be sold.

The club are well aware of interest in the Brazilian from Saudi Arabia, where reports suggest astronomical figures have been floated, including up to a billion euros in salary and a €350 million transfer fee.
While no official offer has been made, the buzz is enough for Madrid to start preparing for all scenarios.
Haaland, long admired at the Bernabeu, is once again being linked with a move as Pérez dreams of pairing him with Mbappe in what would be a fearsome attacking duo.
For now, though, all eyes remain on how the Vinicius situation evolves, but everything suggests Real Madrid are quietly laying the groundwork for a blockbuster contingency plan.
