It has been a difficult year for Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger, who has had to battle fitness problems at every step along the way.

The 32-year-old centre-half spent the first few months of 2025 playing through injury and finally had to undergo surgery in April after the Copa del Rey final, after his body could no longer take it.

Rudiger made a swift return to feature at the FIFA Club World Cup during the summer, only to suffer a fresh injury early in the new season, that kept him out of action until last weekend.

Now, the German is back on the field, playing again, but his future at the club is far from certain, as his contract expires at the end of the season.

Real Madrid happy with Rudiger

According to Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid are very happy with Rudiger, given the defensive quality and the leadership he brings to the table.

However, a final decision over his future has yet to be made, with talks expected to take place in the coming months to resolve the situation.

As has been the case for some time now, the German international is courting interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, who are intent on signing the 32-year-old defender.

Since returning against Girona, Rudiger has performed well in his two matches paired up alongside Eder Militao – so much so that Dean Huijsen’s starting spot, once he returns from injury, is no longer guaranteed.

But there are a lot of things to consider, starting with Rudiger’s fitness issues, which has been a concern for the club. He will also be turning 33 years old in March.

Moreover, the presence of Saudi Arabian clubs and the lucrative offer they will likely table could also influence the situation.

So, as things stand, the matter of Rudiger’s future remains unresolved, and talks will take place between all the stakeholders in the coming months to decide on the best way forward for everyone.
