After already strengthening the back line with the arrivals of Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries, Real Madrid continue to explore additional reinforcements as Jose Mourinho prepares for his second stint at Santiago Bernabeu.
While several names have been linked with Los Blancos in recent weeks, one defender appears to be moving steadily up the priority list.
According to transfer journalist Nicolo Schira, Real Madrid have already held talks with the agent of Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori as they evaluate a potential summer move.
Notably, the contact does not mean a transfer is imminent, but it does indicate that the Spanish giants are working on the operation.

Calafiori has become one of the most discussed defensive names on Real Madrid’s shortlist in recent weeks.
Schira reports that representatives of the player recently met with Real Madrid officials to discuss the possibility of a future move.
The next step now would be direct communication with Arsenal, although no formal negotiations between the clubs have started at this stage.
As of today, Real Madrid have requested information regarding the Italian defender’s availability and contract situation, and the move is being driven largely by Mourinho, who has admired Calafiori for years.
The relationship between the two dates back to their time at AS Roma, where Mourinho followed the defender’s development.

That previous connection is believed to be playing an important role in the current interest.
With David Alaba no longer part of the squad, Real Madrid are searching for players capable of filling multiple roles across the defensive line and Calafiori’s profile fits that requirement perfectly.
Naturally a centre-back, the Italian is also comfortable operating as a left-back.
That versatility could allow Real Madrid to alternate between a traditional back four and systems involving three central defenders, something Mourinho has often used throughout his managerial career.
