Real Madrid were off the blocks quickly in the summer, completing three signings in the form of Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Franco Mastantuono.

Two of the three joined the team in time for the FIFA Club World Cup while Mastantuono will be arriving next month after he turns 18 years old.

Real Madrid, though, wanted another player before flying to the USA for the tournament – Alvaro Carreras. However, Benfica played hardball in negotiations leading to the move not going through.

Real Madrid remain committed to Alvaro Carreras

Now, according to journalist Ruben Martin, even though Real Madrid have had other options to reinforce the left-back position, they continue to hold out for Carreras and remain committed to his signing.

When the operation fell through before the start of the Club World Cup, Los Blancos opted not to sign anyone and go into the tournament with Fran Garcia as the only senior left-back given that Ferland Mendy is out injured.

The Spanish capital giants had options such as Miguel Gutierrez – a former academy talent who could be re-signed on the cheap due to a buyback clause and Theo Hernandez, another ex-player who was in the final year of his contract at AC Milan.

There were murmurs of interest in Alejandro Grimaldo as well, given his familiarity to Xabi Alonso’s methods, having worked with him at Bayer Leverkusen.

Despite that, Real Madrid opted to hold out for Carreras and are still intent on signing him. The deal could pick up the pace in the coming days once the Club World Cup is out of the way.

The player, for his part, is also keen on the move as well, although Benfica’s demands of €50 million – his release clause amount – remains an issue.
