The 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons were queer for Real Madrid, especially in the manner in which they lost out in the crown both times under surprisingly similar circumstances.

Los Blancos entered the final matchday leading the league in both seasons and had their final game of the season away against Tenerife. On both occasions, however, they lost the game and conceded the title to Barcelona.

For the Spanish giants to repeat the blunder in two consecutive years against the same opposition at the same stadium, needless to say, is bizarre and a lot has been said about controversial decisions on both nights.

Real Madrid icon reflects on the title losses

Speaking to the media about the entire saga of losing two league titles to Barcelona in as many years, that too at the same venue, former player Ivan Zamorano recalled how numerous decisions went against the club at that time.

“We lost the League in Tenerife. They robbed us. Two very clear penalties and I was expelled for jumping more than the Tenerife defender. There were very strange, very strange things.”

He also explained how not only the game and refereeing were bizarre but the same was also true about the buildup to the game and how the team reached the venue.

“In that match, there were very strange things. Our president made us travel on two different planes. Our plane was depressurised. The plane lost air, we were drowning, we had to put on the masks.”

“We had to go back to the airport and wait three or four hours to go back to Tenerife. It already started badly there. Then what happened happened,” he added.

On Mbappe, Vinicius

Taking his opportunity to give an opinion on Kylian Mbappe’s start to life at his former club, Zamorano was full of praise for the Frenchman.

“Mbappe is the best in the world. What he does is not done by anyone. Last year they said he was adapting and he scored 40 goals. He has something important, he is a winner and he looks a lot like Cristiano.”

“He looks a lot alike; he doesn’t settle for 40 goals. He knows he is different. It is the emblem of Madrid,” he added.

The former player also spoke about Vinicius, although his words were directed more towards advising him on his antics than praising his quality.

“I love Vinicius. I don’t like some of his attitudes, but they are a reflection of the love he has for the club. Many times we want him to act differently, but maybe in that immaturity there is the suffering of a boy who is criticised for being in some states because of the colour of his skin.”

“But I am convinced that one day he will mature. It has affected him a lot to go from all the lights to the maximum reference being Mbappe.

“It’s not easy to be Vinicius. But I would like him to change some attitudes and realise that Madrid is different from everything,” he added.
