In the last two years, Real Madrid have lost two of their veteran midfielders in Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

While Kroos retired after the Euro 2024, Modric’s spell at Real Madrid came to an end this summer, with the 39-year-old joining AC Milan on a free transfer.

In order to cushion these losses, Real Madrid have yet to bring in new faces in midfield. On the contrary, the club were close to sanctioning the exit of midfielder Dani Ceballos this summer.

However, it appears Real Madrid are now finally starting to realise their lack of depth in central midfield and in their attempt to fix the problem, the club are targeting one of the Premier League’s up-and-coming stars.

Real Madrid eyeing move for Wharton

According to Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid are interested in the services of Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.

Aged 21, Wharton is fast-becoming one of the Premier League’s finest young midfielders, thanks to his ability to spread the play and dictate the tempo of the game.

In many ways, the Englishman is quite similar to Toni Kroos in the way they can both scan the pitch and spread possession.

While Kroos was much more adept in set-piece delivery and those trademark laser passes, Wharton is willing to do the dirty work in the middle of the park – making him an ideal hybrid between a six and an eight.

Romano suggests that Real Madrid are monitoring the progress of Wharton, perhaps with an eye for a 2026 move.

The Italian transfer expert confirms that the Englishman wasn’t interested in leaving Palace this summer, but something could potentially happen in 2026, right after the FIFA World Cup.

One would expect Real Madrid to emerge as one of the potential suitors, although the Spanish giants may face stiff competition from top English clubs.
