A legendary figure in the city of Madrid has on Friday provided his take on the ongoing debate surrounding the situation between the posts in Carlo Ancelotti’s Real squad.

The subject of the goalkeeping options in Spain’s capital has of course taken its place front and centre in the media headlines across the day to date.

This comes after word was forthcoming that the powers that be at the Santiago Bernabéu are giving serious consideration to restoring Thibaut Courtois to starting duties for the upcoming Champions League final.

Despite having only recently returned from a spell of eight months on the sidelines, Courtois is already considered the favourite to feature in Los Blancos’ starting XI at Wembley on June 1st.

As much, of course, would mark a heavy blow for the man to have so thoroughly impressed in Courtois’ absence.

Andriy Lunin, for his part, has played an absolutely crucial role in Real Madrid’s journey to yet another European finale, starring against the likes of RB Leipzig, and Manchester City.

And one individual of the opinion that dropping the Ukrainian for the Champions League showpiece against Borussia Dortmund would mark a mistake, is Iker Casillas.

Speaking in an interview with Cadena SER on Friday, Casillas, arguably the greatest goalkeeper in Real Madrid’s storied history, threw his backing firmly behind Lunin:

“I think in the final Lunin should continue. Courtois doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone, he will be the best goalkeeper in the world again, but he is recently recovered. Lunin has shown he is a guarantee.”
