With Real Madrid scouring the market for a new midfielder heading into the summer, AZ Alkmaar youngster Kees Smit has emerged as a target.
The 20-year-old Dutch prodigy has been on Los Blancos’ radars since last summer and continues to feature on their shortlist as a possible reinforcement before the next season, even though he is not at the top of the priority list.
However, a move for Smit might not materialise as the youngster is seemingly teasing a potential switch to Real Madrid’s bitter rivals FC Barcelona.
The Dutch midfielder has already gone on record about his admiration for the Blaugrana, and his latest comments are unlikely to go down too well at Valdebebas.
Having helped AZ win the Dutch Cup this season, Smit is set to fly to Barcelona along with his teammates to celebrate the trophy success.

And, when asked whether he would make use of the trip to talk to the Catalan club, Smit jovially responded (h/t MARCA):
“If they ask me to negotiate, I’m totally willing to do so. Of course, I have time for that.”
“It’s the only way to celebrate with the group for a while, but then we have two more games. We’ll have a great time there,” he further said about the trip to Barcelona.
These statements come days after former Real Madrid midfielder and Dutch legend Rafael van der Vaart had confidently tipped Smit to move to the Santiago Bernabeu in the near future.
Whether these comments, made in jest, end up affecting Smit’s chances of securing a move to Real Madrid remains to be seen.
