Despite heavy rumours to the contrary this summer, Dani Ceballos is still a Real Madrid player. But his limited playing time is set to take a further hit, with injury set to keep him off the pitch for a while.

Real Madrid conducted tests on their midfielder on Monday morning, which discovered that he has a grade 3 sprain in his right ankle, potentially keeping him out of action for two months.

Ceballos played 65 minutes against Real Betis on Sunday and featured heavily in his side’s pre-season friendlies, so he will be very disappointed with this discovery.

Indeed, with Real Madrid’s hectic schedule this season, Ceballos will have been optimistic that he would earn his chance to play through rotation, and potentially earn his way into contention under Carlo Ancelotti’s system.

By the time Ceballos returns, Real Madrid’s Champions League campaign will be well underway, and the 28-year-old will just have to remain hopeful that he won’t be forgotten about in such a star-studded squad.

In the meantime, all the midfielder can do is work hard on his recovery and try to make his time on the sidelines is as short as possible.
