Real Madrid’s search for defensive reinforcements continues, but one name can now be crossed off the list.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Nico Schlotterbeck was never close to joining the Spanish giants this summer and was never involved in advanced discussions with the club.

The Nico Schlotterbeck Real Madrid rumours gathered momentum in recent weeks as Los Blancos explored options to strengthen their backline despite already securing the arrival of Ibrahima Konate.

However, the latest update suggests the Borussia Dortmund defender was never a concrete target.

Schlotterbeck’s Real Madrid move was never close

Real Madrid transfer news in recent weeks had linked Schlotterbeck with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, particularly after reports claimed the club were monitoring his situation following the inclusion of a release clause in his new Dortmund contract.

The German international recently extended his stay with Borussia Dortmund, although his agreement allows selected clubs to sign him for around €50 million under specific conditions.

That development naturally increased speculation surrounding a potential Nico Schlotterbeck Real Madrid transfer.

Despite appreciation for the player’s qualities, Romano reports that Schlotterbeck has never been considered a priority target for Real Madrid this summer.

What’s the reason?

An important factor behind Real Madrid’s decision is the Nico Schlotterbeck injury suffered during the World Cup with Germany.

The 26-year-old sustained an ankle problem while representing his national team and is expected to spend around two months away from competitive action.

As a result, the Borussia Dortmund defender will miss the remainder of the tournament and could also be sidelined for the opening weeks of the new La Liga campaign.

While the injury is not considered a long-term concern, Real Madrid are unwilling to take any unnecessary risks in the transfer market.

The club’s coaching staff would ideally prefer any new arrival to be available immediately, allowing them to participate fully in pre-season preparations and adapt quickly to the demands of the squad.

That situation has significantly reduced Schlotterbeck’s appeal when compared to other fully fit alternatives being monitored by the club.
