One of Xabi Alonso’s primary concerns in the Real Madrid squad been over the defensive midfield position, which is ironically the role he used to play for the club during his time as a player.
Martin Zubimendi, who eventually signed for Arsenal, was one of the names widely linked with the men in white as a reinforcement in the same department.
In recent months, however, the name of Manchester City’s Rodri has also popped up on the club’s radar for the Ballon d’Or winner is one of, if not the best pivot player on the planet.
As confirmed by Fabrizio Romano in a recent update, though, Real Madrid are not working on the signing of the Manchester City star as it stands.
Furthermore, even Rodri is not considering leaving the Premier League side in any capacity this summer.

The idea of Rodri’s move to Real Madrid, despite being widely speculated, is thus currently not on the table for Florentino Perez and Co. or the midfielder himself. There are no ongoing negotiations between the clubs over the same.
Part of the reason why Los Blancos are reluctant to sign the talented midfielder likely stems down to his long-term injury that kept him out of most of last season. He did play in the FIFA Club World Cup but ended the tournament injured once more.
Rodri’s fitness record and recent injury, thus, leaves many doubts over the extent to which he can recover his pre-injury level.
Moreover, his contract with Manchester City runs until June 2027 which means the English side are likely to demand a massive fee. On top of that, Pep Guardiola’s team is also working on offering him a renewal.
There is interest in working together in the future from both parties and it remains to be seen if anything comes of it in the coming transfer windows. At the moment, however, the door appears to be shut.
