Real Madrid have formally started their presidential election process on Thursday, two days after announcing a new vote. The club said in a statement that candidacies can be lodged over 10 days, until 23 May.
The election rules, which were amended by Florentino Pérez in a previous term, are stringent. A candidate must be a Spanish national, a socio for 20 years and provide a bank guarantee of at least 187 million euros, equivalent to 15% of the club’s annual budget.
Pérez, 79, confirmed on Tuesday at a press conference that he will stand again, after a second successive season without a major trophy. He was re-elected unopposed in January 2025 for a four-year term.
The only other potential contender for now is Enrique Riquelme, president of the Cox Group in water and energy. He said he is considering running and that he meets all the eligibility requirements.
If no other candidacies are filed, Pérez would remain in charge, as happened in 2013, 2017, 2021 and 2025.
