Real Madrid have confirmed that Xabi Alonso has stepped down as the club’s head coach by mutual agreement.
Alonso leaves the Spanish giants after just over seven months in charge, following Sunday’s Spanish Super Cup final 3-2 defeat to Barcelona and with Madrid four points adrift of their rivals at the top of La Liga.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder officially took over on 1 June, following a successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen, where he won the domestic double in 2023-24 and guided the team to the Europa League final. He began strongly at the Bernabéu, winning 13 of his first 14 matches, the only blip being a heavy derby loss to Atlético Madrid, and later oversaw the team’s run to the Club World Cup semi-finals.
Alonso’s departure comes after 34 games in charge, during which he recorded 24 wins, four draws and six defeats.
