The international break started out in the worst possible fashion for Real Madrid fans, with Kylian Mbappe picking up an injury shortly after scoring a goal in the second half.

While we await the test results of Mbappe’s injury, one of the few bright sparks from the France vs Turkiye game was the performance of Arda Guler.

The youngster was one of the finest performers for Turkiye, even though they lost the game.

Guler sends a message to Mourinho

As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Guler’s display was effectively a message to Jose Mourinho, who has struggled to get the best out of his midfield this season.

Many of Real Madrid’s early-season problems stem from a lack of creativity and control in the middle of the park, an issue that has lingered since Toni Kroos departed.

Guler has long been touted as a potential heir to the German, with a growing debate over whether he should play more centrally rather than out wide.

Given the reins by Turkish coach Vincenzo Montella against France, Guler thrived, producing several high-quality plays and unlocking attacking opportunities for his side.

It was a timely reminder of his talent, particularly with Mourinho persisting with the underwhelming Valverde-Tchouameni pairing in midfield.

The Turk will hope his international showings can convince Mourinho to hand him a more central, prominent role when club football resumes.

That said, Guler faces stiff competition for a starting spot, and one strong display does not guarantee more minutes.

After all, Yan Diomande also impressed during the break, starring for Ivory Coast in their win over Ghana.

With both youngsters staking their claims, Mourinho has a welcome selection headache on his hands.

For Guler, the challenge will be forcing his way into the side on a consistent basis, having yet to complete a full 90 minutes this season.

Nonetheless, his creativity could prove exactly what Real Madrid’s misfiring midfield needs, and it will be interesting to see how the youngster performs in Turkey’s coming matches.
